Say Hello to Cindy and Patrick

Our Story:
I was youth coordinator at our community church and saw Patrick’s sister sitting by her lonesome so I decided to exchange phone numbers and invite her to our upcoming event. Little did I know, her brother was obsessed with me. Patrick saw the number tucked in his sister’s bible and decided to call the number immediately after Sunday’s service. I rejected him numerous times because I simply did not know him that well. However, he would not give up. He sent flowers, wrote several French poems when he discovered how much I adored the language, and he just kept wooing me until I gave him a chance. Before we even decided to become an item, he told me he was going to marry me. After getting to know him for a year as friends and we helped each other overcome hard period in our lives – I knew I was falling for him. When he asked me out as her girlfriend, he said “Can you be my queen?” and ever since then, he always treated me like one and we have been inseparable since.

Cameras have been a staple in our household for years. Just one step in our living room and you will see by the first glance, we are obsessed with photographs. My love for the photographic world started through my mother, she always captured our years throughout our childhood so since then my camera and I are one, everywhere I go, she “goes”.

Even throughout our relationship, although my fiancé use to find it somewhat annoying, we now have over a thousand wonderful memories on film. Unfortunately, my mother has been on disability for the last five years and will not be able to assist us to have the wedding of our dreams, which I know would include an A-list photographer. In addition, our wedding budget has been lowered since my fiancé, who is Haiti earthquake survivor, and I have to help our families in Haiti who need us the most right now. This period has been the most scariest and stressful time of our lives but we are both grateful for each other and the well being of our families. With the event that just took place, we definitely want all our family members and love ones present to share one of the most exciting days of our lives but there is little room in our budget for a high guest list as well as a signature photographer – we will have to pick our families over an expensive photography.  I truly feel like we deserve this contest since winning this not only helps us but having the benefit of both the presence of the family and our passion/my mother’s dream for signature photography would be feasible.

A letter to Grandpa

Thursday June 24, 2010

Dear Grandpa,

You went to heaven on a Tuesday.  Here in NY, it was a bright sunny day and I was at work in the middle of a conference call getting distracted by facebook messages from our family saying goodbye to you.  I had left my cel phone home that day and didn’t see any of the text messages that everyone was sending me about you passing on.  I was completely caught off guard that you had slipped away so quickly.  For days I was ridden with guilt for not coming by to see you that last time we were in Hawaii.  I was heartbroken that I never had a chance to say goodbye to you.  To see your jolly smile just one. last. time.  I hope as you watch over us now that you can forgive me for my complacency.  Never again will I say “maybe next time” or assume that someone will always be around.  I ask for your forgiveness and pray that you watch over all of us as you always did in life.  It pains me to know that my little Addison only met you once but am grateful that she had that opportunity.

Grandpa, you are one of my childhood heroes.  You always took criticism with a smile.  You had a tough exterior and a soft heart.  You were a jolly man who is adored by his grandchildren.  My fondest childhood memories always included you.  I think of the days you used to take all of us kids; Me, Charity, Marlone, Dominic, Mark, Chet, Jade all by yourself to share a day with us at the park or sunday school at your church.  I type this memory beaming from ear to ear remembering the time you challenged Marlone and I to a push-up contest.  Of course I always lost to Marlone who would easily get to 100 push-ups while I was exhausted by 20.  But years later while at boot-camp in the Navy I knocked out 200 push-ups during a PT session and the first thought that came to mind was you.

In my life, you are a detail that cannot be seen but whose presence is always felt.  In my adult life I rarely had a chance to see you but in everyday life I am reminded of you.  You always challenged us to always be critical and to think out of the box and when I am challenged with something difficult I remember you, your stories and sometimes hilarious anecdotes of adapting and overcoming.  Today we lay you down to rest.  No more pain, no more suffering.  Only love.  I love you.  I miss you.  Please watch over us all and keep us safe.

Love,

Jaymie
